Like a lighthouse (Majakka), the high-rise building characterizes the new REDI district which comprises seven other multi-storey structures and the largest shopping and entertainment centre in the city centre. Through the architectural design of the skyscrapers, an urban and fashionable neighbourhood is being created.
Expertise in climbing technology and top service quality make a convincing case
With around 5.5 million inhabitants on an area almost as big as Germany, Finland is one of the most sparsely populated countries in Europe. Up to now, high-rise structures with more than 15 floors have rarely been built in the country. PERI therefore supported the construction team with technical know-how during the planning phase. Based on numerous European reference projects featuring PERI climbing technology, PERI engineers demonstrated the functionality and advantages of the RCS Climbing System. Whilst visiting a project in Poland, the Finnish construction team saw the climbing system in action and assessed the solution extremely positively since the gains in efficiency rise with the increasing height of the building. For structures with 10 to approx. 30 storeys, the RCS Rail Climbing System is a very cost-effective solution, especially due to the low costs involved for the mobile climbing hydraulics.
Just as important as the technical assistance provided by PERI in the planning phase was the continuous support that was available for all technical questions during the construction work. As the Finnish construction team were using the RCS Climbing System for the first time, it was not only about application issues but also finding solutions regarding the architectural features of the project.
Wind protection from top to bottom
The PERI RCS P Climbing Protection Panel served as the enclosure as well as anti-fall protection. Gap-free enclosure of the floors in the building shell allowed the construction team to work safely and efficiently at all times and protected site personnel from the range of wind and weather conditions also at great heights. Due to the project’s location near the coast, high wind loads had to be taken into account for the planning and execution of the 134 m high building.
Due to the safe rail-guided climbing procedure, the climbing unit was securely connected to the building at all times. Climbing procedure was both fast and safe also during strong winds. This was a decisive advantage because the wind is a serious risk factor in this region. The construction schedule also took into consideration, for example, the amount of downtime on days with wind speeds over 25 m/s.
Cores formed in the shortest time possible with MAXIMO
The skeleton construction was braced by means of centrally-arranged elevator shafts. For constructing the inner core walls, MAXIMO Panel Formwork with associated shaft corners provided a very economical solution. At the same time, the MXSE Shaft Corners served as 90° internal corners as well as striking panels. Thanks to the ingenious PERI technology, a 35 mm striking clearance was created when releasing the shaft corners and pulled with the crane lifting gear which meant that the entire internal formwork could quickly be struck as a complete unit and lifted out by crane to be taken to the next concreting section. The MAXIMO external formwork for the core climbed with the RCS Rail Climbing System.
REDI city district
REDI is currently one of the largest and most significant construction projects in the entire Helsinki metropolitan region. This new city district comprises six residential towers, a hotel and an office block and the REDI shopping centre, the largest shopping and entertainment center in the heart of the Finnish capital. Following the scheduled opening in autumn 2018, the REDI shopping centre offers residents and visitors not only an extensive range of retail outlets and restaurants but also new and exciting leisure-time options on an area covering more than 60,000 m².
